How Tune works
Everything about making a token whose image plays as music: how a picture becomes a song, the instruments and settings, what's saved inside the image, and what launching costs.
What is Tune
Tune is a launchpad for tokens on pump.fun where the token image is a song. You draw on music paper, or upload an image, and hear it play. When you launch, the song and its settings are saved inside the token image itself, so anyone who opens the token on Tune hears exactly what its creator made.
A Tune token is a normal pump.fun token, not an NFT: anyone can buy, sell or hold it, and anyone can hear its song, holder or not. Only tokens launched through Tune play; others have no song inside.
Quick start
- 1
Make the song
Open Launch. Draw on the paper or upload an image, press play, and shape how it sounds: key, tempo, drums.
- 2
Name your token
Continue to step 2: give it a name and a ticker, and optionally a description and links.
- 3
Launch
Check the cost, connect your wallet and approve. The token is created on pump.fun and you land on its Tune page, playing.
How a picture plays
- Left to right is time. A playhead sweeps across the paper and loops.
- Higher is a higher note. The height of a line picks its pitch, in the key you choose.
- Each colour is an instrument. A green line plays keys, a pink one strings, and so on (below).
- Lines are melodies. Each line you draw is followed on its own, so crossing lines stay separate voices. Up to 16 play at once.
- Shapes play their edges. In an uploaded image, a filled shape plays its top and bottom edges; thin lines play where they are.
Uploaded images are read by their colours: each part plays the instrument whose ink colour is closest, and areas close to the paper colour stay quiet. Clear lines on a plain background make clear melodies.
Instruments
There are nine instruments. Any colour you pick with the colour picker plays the nearest one. Struck instruments ring out and fade; held ones sound for as long as the line lasts.
| Colour | Instrument | Plays |
|---|---|---|
| Keys | Rings out | |
| Pluck | Rings out | |
| Bell | Rings out | |
| Marimba | Rings out | |
| Flute | Holds | |
| Strings | Holds | |
| Chime | Rings out, an octave up | |
| Bass | Holds, an octave down | |
| Chip | Holds |
The gradient pen puts up to five colours on one line. The instrument follows the colour, so one stroke can hand over from keys to bell to pluck. Repeat cycles the colours along the line; Fit spreads them once from end to end.
Sound settings
- Key and scale. Any of the 12 keys, in major pentatonic, minor pentatonic, major, minor, harmonic minor, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, blues. In Key pitch mode every note lands in the scale, so nothing sounds off.
- Range. One to three octaves from the bottom of the paper to the top.
- Tempo. 60 to 180 bpm.
- Notes per beat. Triplets, 1/8, 1/16: how finely time is divided.
- Swing. Off, Light, Medium, Hard. Not with triplets, which already swing.
- Pitch. Key, Slide, Free glide. Key snaps to notes, Slide glides between them, Free glide follows the line exactly.
- Drums. One groove at a time: Kit, House, Trap, Boom bap, Latin. Add Bass and Arp on top of any of them.
Drawing tools
- Pens. 13 colours plus a colour picker, three brush sizes (Fine, Medium, Bold) and the gradient pen.
- Eraser, undo and redo. Undo and redo with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z.
- Upload. Start from an image and draw over it. It plays by its colours.
- Paper. Light or dark. On dark paper the black pen draws white.
- Credit. An optional usetune.fun mark at the bottom of the image. It's never read as sound.
- Publish as. Drawing publishes your picture as it is; Pixel grid publishes the song as note cells, like pixel art, and shows you the exact image first.
The song in the image
When you launch, Tune writes the song into the token image file: a small text block inside the PNG, labelled tune-lines. It holds the settings (key, scale, tempo, drums, pitch) and every line exactly as it plays. The file is stored on IPFS by pump.fun and can't change afterwards.
That's why a Tune token sounds the same for everyone, forever, and why tokens launched elsewhere have no song: their images don't carry one. The song doesn't depend on Tune's database either: anyone can read it back from the image.
Launching and costs
Tokens are created on pump.fun from your own wallet. Tune never holds your funds or keys: you approve one transaction in your wallet, which shows the exact amount first.
| Creating the tokenpump.fun charges nothing | Free |
| Network fees and the token's accountsGoes to the Solana network | ≈ 0.02 SOL |
| TuneTune takes nothing | 0 SOL |
| Dev buy (optional)Your own buy at launch. pump.fun's 1.25% trading fee and PumpPortal's 0.5% apply to it | You choose |
Names are up to 32 characters, tickers up to 10, and a dev buy up to 50 SOL. The token's website on pump.fun is always its Tune page, so people there can hear it.
After launch
- Its token page plays the song, with the market cap and bonding-curve progress from pump.fun, the number of holders, and the launch settings.
- Creator fees. pump.fun pays the creator 0.3% of every trade while the token is on the bonding curve. Connect the creator wallet on the token page to collect them.
- Explore lists every Tune token, newest first, with search by name, ticker or address.
- Sharing. Every token page has its own preview card for X and other apps.
Safety
- Tokens are risky. Most lose most or all of their value. Only use what you can afford to lose.
- Tune doesn't vouch for tokens. Anyone can launch here; being listed isn't a recommendation. The song says nothing about a token's value.
- Launches are permanent. Nobody, including Tune, can edit or delete a token or its image.
- Check addresses. Copycat tokens reuse names. Trust the address, not the name.
